Week 11, Back-Blog

11/25/2013 17:42

During Week 11, We decided I would play the role of making sure that the art needs and limitations are in sync with the design needs and limitations. I found a use for this role immediately when we were asked for what the design and tech were going to be making next and one of the things was different acting floors, like mud or ice, etc. It was settled that we would have three floors, a normal, a slow, and a fast / slippery one. In consulting with art about what our world is (Tent World), I decided that the fast / slippery floor would be cut for flavor reasons. What could be slippery in the mountainous desert?

We issued out some art for the world we are aiming for, I'm doing walls, Tyler Floors, and Kyle the walls and buttons.

From Design, not much is going on for me. We're still waiting for the level editor to be given to us. Not where I think we should be on this project by this point on all fronts. Basic functions haven't worked yet. Last week's fiasco alpha showcasing should have at least had collisions and a rolling function and some of the art put it I think.

Week 12

11/25/2013 17:34

Starting Week 13, We just received a reminder that we haven't been keeping up on our blogs. Wow, I have completely forgotten that this even existed, I wish the reminder had come even as little as two months ago.

For this last week, I've been getting more push towards design on Rolli Polli Princess. Still need a new name. I'm coming up with design concepts using what few tools we have or are anticipating.

From the art side, we have had some trouble with the other artists making content for this world, actually even I have had trouble despite being the visionaire. So what I've done is taken Becky's advise and went back to look for reference. I really liked looking to warcraft / wow for the inspiration. I think I found good references, and began working on a 3d reference to show everyone tomorrow for proof of concept. I suggested that we do this since the lead Brett seemed concerned that this is a viable map.

Going to have to now back-blog the best that I can.

I should have a lot more time for these projects since I'm quitting my job this week.

Also brought up an issue with David and Nick, that there's inconsistancy with ideas about if we are making a game that uses feminism, or a game that is about feminism. The difference is night and day to me. For example, would a movie that is animal-friendly the same as a movie about bringing awareness of cruelty to animals? No. David and Nick want to tackle the issues, I didn't know that, which makes a sense why they were fighting my negative feedback about some of their propositions. I don't really want to make it a game that is about feminism, because I think positive role models are more than enough to make it a good game that uses feminism to make a fun and entertaining game. I think to tackle the issues of feminism, we would make a controversial game that would just as easily offend or send mixed messages.

Week 1

08/29/2013 17:01

End of Week 1,

Preparing a pitch for next tuesday. I've narrowed the choices down to three:
A Jousting Game using the positioning mechanism to encourage physical activity

A Comedy Game where you trip and maim skateboarders

Airhockey using touch screen

My personal favorite was the jousting game because it sounded fun to run at people with your Vita and try to time your attacks and position your defense.

However, the most enthusiast response has been to a comedy game about tripping and maiming skateboarders. Jousting sounds like it would be very complex to write but pretty simple gameplay. Skateboarder maiming sounds like it would be a pretty standard game, we'd ham up the violence to play to its strengths. I keep wondering who the "player" is though. Maybe we make a selection menu to choose one of several probably suspects: a little brother, a police officer, a principal, a trolling punk?

And Airhockey sounds fun and very intuitive, but it almost sounds boring, maybe because I'm not enthusiastic about airhockey as a whole. Although we could always spice it up with new features, and honestly I feel absolutely certain we would have to, just to give us enough to do.

So far leaning toward Skateboarder Maiming (needs a better name)
